At Bowesfield Primary School, music is a practical, creative subject which can enhance the lives and learning of all children. Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It gives an opportunity for personal expression and it can play an important part in the personal development of an individual. Music reflects our diverse culture and local area and we want to share life experiences and inspirational people with the children. We aim to enthuse children and promote a better understanding of the world they live in.
Our aim is to promote enthusiasm for and enjoyment of music and to develop musical skills, knowledge and a range of vocabulary. The children learn accurate musical terminology which is revisited and discussed throughout each year group to support their understanding further.
By engaging children in a variety of musical experiences, we can offer our children opportunities to develop skills and techniques, positive attitudes and attributes that can support learning in other curriculum areas. It develops listening skills, resilience and creativity. We want to encourage self-confidence to enable children to analyse and self-assess their own personal performance.
To support teaching and learning in music, the curriculum is based on ‘Charanga’ – an online scheme of work by Tees Valley Music Service. The areas of learning are: Listening and appraising, musical activities, creating and exploring, singing and performing.
