Intent
At Bowesfield Primary school, we teach French as a modern foreign language to enable our children to be prepared for a rapidly changing world. Jobs and opportunities in Britain and across the world increasingly demand knowledge and consideration of more than one language.
The intent of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and a thirst for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and an understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We aim to build the children’s interest and curiosity, enabling them to study the similarities and differences between cultures.
Through the teaching and learning of French, children in our school will develop an understanding of communication and how languages in society can be diverse
French is taught in KS2 on a weekly basis (45mins-60mins) but elements of French communication can be introduced in KS1 and EYFS, if needed.
Planning and assessment
Teaching MFL at Bowesfield should provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and should lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3.
It should enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. The focus of study in modern languages will be on practical communication. All evidence of learning will be focused on the end points in each term.
A simple assessment tool (A4 assessment sheet) is provided in BPS curriculum – French 2022 and needs to be added to floor books (working collaboratively with PSHE floor book). Please include any photo’s/a sample of pieces of work using Pic collage. (will add in an example asap)
Implementation
- listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding.
- explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words.
- engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help.
- speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.
- develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases; • present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences.
- read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
- appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language.
- broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary.
- write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly.
- describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
- understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.
MFL/French guidelines:
- provide the best learning opportunity for our children in KS2 in a second (or for some a third) language.
- make staff feel confident to teach a language with support and guidance from lesson observations and staff training.
- Provide the relevant teaching lessons which provide a rich and practical source of learning.
- Give children the opportunity to learn another language.
- To develop the foundation of French to lead onto their secondary schools
- To liaise with primary/secondary schools to keep up to date with current changes in teaching a language
